Day 383: Like an Autocrat, Trump Claims Democrats Were Treasonous For Not Cheering Him
Donald Trump was in Cincinnati on Monday, speaking at a factory to promote his agenda and celebrate the passage of the tax bill.
Things took a sudden turn, as they often do when he speaks off-the-cuff, when he accused Democrats for being “treasonous” and “un-American” simply for not cheering him during the State of the Union.
Dictators demand blind followers who cheer their every word. Maybe Trump has watched too many Kim Jong-un speeches, or has found his way onto Youtube to watch archival footage of Saddam Hussein’s orations. Perhaps someone told Trump about the infamous 1937 Communist Party rally where members were so afraid to stop cheering after a Joseph Stalin tribute that they clapped for 11 continuous minutes. At the very least, Trump appears to have forgotten about his own criticisms of past State of the Union addresses.
It’s decidedly not un-American to disagree with an elected official’s political positions. There may be nothing more American than the freedom to disagree and to express those sentiments.
Democrats in Congress who served in the military honorably seemed particularly aghast at Trump’s rhetoric.
Meanwhile, as usual, Republicans were perfectly willing to defend him.
Based on his words, Trump must have also thought it was treasonous for the Joint Chiefs of Staff to have this reaction when he announced his plan to increase the U.S.’s nuclear stockpile.
