Day 382: Donald Trump and Devin Nunes Were Made For Each Other
Over the past year-plus, few people have exposed themselves to be more of a political hack than Devin Nunes (R-CA). There’s been his farcical runs to the White House with allegedly bombshell information about Trump being surveilled, his grandstanding in the Capitol building, recusals from his plum House Intelligence Committee Chairman role, unrecusals, and, of course, last week’s dud of a memo that may have done more harm than good to the Donald Trump-Russia narrative.
Few duos in Washington have made a worse pairing than Nunes and Trump, as neither actually has the political acumen to navigate ever-changing tides, but the two have attached themselves to each other anyway.
After Nunes’ memo was trashed all weekend, including from conservative congressmen in both the House and Senate, Trump came to his ally’s aid.
This tweet followed Nunes’ appearance on Trump’s favorite TV show, Fox & Friends. On the show, Nunes claimed that former Trump aide George Papadopoulos — who was charged with and pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI regarding the Russia investigation, and who Nunes’ own memo credits with the missteps that led to the launching the FBI investigation to begin with — was a small time player who didn’t even know Trump:
“If Papadopoulos was such a major figure, you had nothing on him, you know, the guy lied. As far as we can tell, Papadopoulos never even knew who — never even had met with the president.”
Of course, the below photograph made the rounds after Trump previously blasted Papadopoulos as nothing more than mere “coffee boy” who was uninvolved in important issues.
That would be Papadopoulos third from the left, Trump at the top of the photo, as well as current Attorney General Jeff Sessions and other key figures around the table.
Trump and Nunes are not only terrible liars and political hacks, they’re perfect for each other.
