Day 376: Judge Trump by His History, Not How He Reads State of the Union
After he delivers the State of the Union Tuesday night, Donald Trump will not be any more presidential than he was yesterday or last week or last month or last year, despite what some pockets of pundits are likely to say. While Trump’s rhetoric is likely to be more bipartisan than typical and the tone dialed back at the glorified pep rally, that doesn’t change what’s going on in the White House.
Trump will still be the same man being investigated for obstruction of justice and colluding with a foreign power to tip an election.
Trump will still be the same man being enabled, by many, many Republicans around him. As the nation inches closer to a constitutional crisis, the red half of Capitol Hill continues to do Trump’s bidding by looking for ways to oust or discredit special counsel Robert Mueller or being content to look the other way while their colleagues do.
Trump will still be the same man constantly trying to undermine both the free press and U.S. intelligence agencies.
Trump will still be the same neurotic egomaniac who watches TV all day.
Trump will still be the same man with enough emoluments issues to trigger impeachment articles tomorrow, if Congress so desired.
Trump will still be the same man who is trying to raise money during his speech.
Trump will still be the same man who says one things and does another.
Trump will still be the same man who threatens nuclear war on Twitter, who is away from the White House playing golf almost as often as he’s there, who doesn’t know the national anthem, who has an a long and ugly history of racism, who has cowered on the world stage, who refuses to have press conferences, and whose meetings with foreign leaders have ranged from bizarre to reckless.
Whatever happens Tuesday night, Trump will wake up a few hours later the same man. Reading words written by others isn’t a cause for celebration, it’s cause for an ‘A’ for a first grader.
