Day 369: Mike Pence is a Valueless Hack
Over the last year-plus, and even back during campaign season, Mike Pence was conspicuously absent from high-profile events and meetings. He made headlines late last year when he has popped his head up for an expensive publicity stunt at an NFL game. Other than that, however, he’s been happy to remain mostly in the shadows.
Still, when he opens his mouth, he’s quick to remind everyone what a shill he is.
The uber-religious Pence threw water on the whole Donald Trump porn star affair.
This despite Trump’s well-documented proclivity for womanizing, including trying to get his friends’ wives into bed with him. Other than a few light rebukes of the story and alleged $130,000 payoff from Trump’s team, nobody seems particularly convinced or surprised.
Of course, there’s the whole evidence that it actually happened thing, too.
Pence, who sold out to run with a thrice-wed boor who hates him, isn’t about to stop selling his soul now.
He also blindly defended Trump’s “shithole” remarks by claiming that Trump means well.
“I know the president’s heart and I know that what President Trump wants to do is reform immigration to make our system one that puts the interests of America first,” Pence said. He added that immigrants should be considered on their merits, regardless of what country they come from or what their race and creed is.”
Pence then got in front of the military in the Middle East and attempted to sow political discontent.
Historically, both parties have not used U.S. military members as political props to be used for ancillary fights on Capitol Hill. Debating about military budgets, directions of foreign policy and more are fair game in Washington D.C., but getting in front of active military members — in the Middle East, no less — and accusing the minority party of wanting to tamper with military pay is detestable.
There are Democrats in the military. There are Republicans and Independents and wholly apolitical men and women in the military. When the uniform goes on, politics should be irrelevant. Chain of command matters, and the commander-in-chief is the commander-in-chief regardless of party or gender or age or eye color or height.
Pence is not only attempting to make politics relevant, but largely misleading the very people he was speaking to.
Pence did not mention that a Democrat, Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri, had tried on Saturday to push a measure in the Senate that would guarantee military pay throughout the shutdown. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) blocked that proposal.
“You and your families shouldn’t have to worry for one minute about whether you’re going to get paid because you serve in the uniform of the United States. So know this: Your president, your vice president and the American people are not going to put up with it,” Pence said to applause.
Every day, Pence tramples on his alleged values by doing the bidding of a liar and divider. That makes him just as culpable.
