Day 300: Jeff Sessions Apparently Has the Worst Memory in Washington
Attorney General Jeff Sessions testified before the House Judiciary Committee yesterday, on a wide array of issues. He was asked about everything from investigating political opponents to the Roy Moore allegations. However, his testimony predominately focused on previous appearances before Senate committees and about contacts with Russian officials by members of the Trump campaign team.
Sessions was asked about George Papadopoulos, a Trump campaign foreign policy adviser, pleading guilty to misleading investigators and Papadopoulos’ attempts to coordinate meetings between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.
Sessions claimed the reason for any prior misleading testimony was that he had no recollection of that meeting until he saw it reported in news reports. Conveniently, he now remembers the meeting but not the substance.
This lack of recollection has been a pattern for Sessions and cropped up more than a few times yesterday.
One possible reason for Sessions’ opaque answers? It’s basically impossible to prosecute someone for perjury who claims they don’t recall something. How can a prosecutor prove what someone did or did not remember?
Sessions has already been burned at least once and seems to be doing everything to avoid doing it again.
For instance, under oath, Sessions initially testified that he never met with any Russians during the campaign. Then, when there was evidence he had met with Russians on multiple occasions, he changed his story that he didn’t understand the question and that the meeting was only in his capacity as a senator, not a member of the Trump campaign team. (This despite one meeting occurring right before a major foreign policy speech from Trump and another occurring on the sidelines of the Republican National Convention.)
Sessions’ selective amnesia continues to deal with one thing and one thing only: Russia. He is currently professing that he doesn’t recall multiple conversations regarding members of the Trump team meeting with Russians or going to Russia.
It remains to be seen how Sessions memory will be jogged as more information comes to light.
