As first reported by CNN, special counsel Robert Mueller has secured his initial round of charges from the grand jury related to his investigation into Russia interfering with the 2016 election.

A federal grand jury in Washington on Friday approved the first charges in the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to sources briefed on the matter.

The charges are still sealed under orders from a federal judge. Plans were prepared Friday for anyone charged to be taken into custody as soon as Monday, the sources said. It is unclear what the charges are.

Earlier in the day, former acting-attorney general Dana Boente abruptly resigned from his high profile post as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Clearly the Mueller news and Boente news are connected in some manner, but the extent or exact connection is presently unknown.

Things are happening and moving a lot faster than many thought. Donald Trump and his team are likely to try and maneuver, however possible, to slow down or even stop the investigation. Failing to do that, they will likely attempt to slander any findings and turn this into a partisan battle.

This could be the first step in Watergate-esque revelations dealing with numerous senior members of Trump’s staff. Alternatively — and, at this point, unlikelier — there may only be a few low-level politicos implicated in the Mueller investigation who assisted or worked with the well-coordinated Russians.

At the very least, expect a lot more clarity in the coming days and weeks.
