Day -28: Trump: I Want Nukes Now

Donald Trump tweeted, as is apparently the best method for making absurd, world-changing announcements that he wanted more nukes.

During and after the Cold War, both the U.S. and Soviets agreed to reduce the amount of nuclear weapons stockpiles they each had. They came to their senses. Changing policy on this is news of the highest magnitude. It increases the odds of another global showdown, with Russia or elsewhere.

If Twitter is the worst place to break this kind of news, shills on Morning Joe are running a close second. This morning they reported a conversation they had with Trump where he doubled down on his tweet.

This is not normal.

A power hungry madman who is baited by tweets on a daily basis wants nuclear proliferation.

As CNBC reported, the messages from Trump and his communications team are totally incongruous.

Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said in several television interviews on Friday that there would not be an arms race because the president-elect would ensure that other countries trying to step up their nuclear capabilities, such as Russia and China, would decide not to do so.

“He’s going to ensure that other countries get the message that he’s not going to sit back and allow that,” Spicer, who was named this week as White House spokesman for the president-elect, told NBC. “And what’s going to happen is they will come to their senses, and we will all be just fine.”

Asked about the tweet, Trump spokesman Jason Miller later said Trump was “referring to the threat of nuclear proliferation and the critical need to prevent it — particularly to and among terrorist organizations and unstable and rogue regimes.”

Miller’s explanation that “strengthen and expand [the U.S.’s] nuclear capabilities” actually means “prevention” is insulting to the literate.

Spicer, speaking on behalf of the administration says, “We will all be just fine.”
