Day 278: Top Two GOP Senate Leaders Admit They Blindly Follow Trump
In case there was any doubt about the Republicans’ alignment with Donald Trump — or about Trump’s sway on legislative agenda — Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Senate majority whip John Cornyn (R-TX) just blew that to pieces.
Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Lamar Alexander (R-TN) put in place the framework of a deal to fund a key insurance subsidy program that would lower premiums for many individuals enrolled in insurance plans procured in the Affordable Care Act exchanges.
The bipartisan bill to provide stable funding for cost-sharing reduction subsidies (CSRs) is supported by all 48 members of the Democratic caucus and at least a dozen Republicans.
Still, McConnell has ceded his position — one of the most powerful in the federal government — to Trump. McConnell has passed on the idea of even bringing the bill to a vote until hearing from the Oval Office.
“I’m not certain yet, what the president is looking for here, but I’ll be happy to bring a bill to the floor if I know President Trump would sign it,” McConnell said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
In other words, McConnell will support and bring to the floor the bill only if Trump says he can. Unsurprisingly, McConnell has not espoused a personal leaning about the bill.
Cornyn has taken the same position, fervently aligning himself with Trump, even if he doesn’t know how Trump is aligned.
That would be the No. 1 and No. 2 ranking Republican Senators publicly attaching themselves at the hips of Donald Trump.
Three blind mice. Americans terrified about their health care premiums will wait to see how they run.
