Day 272: Trump to Gold Star Widow: Your Husband ‘Knew What He Signed Up For’

Sgt. La David T. Johnson was killed in Niger two weeks ago, along with three other American soldiers, during an ambush by ISIS-affiliated militants. Donald Trump said nothing about the incident until a reporter asked him a question about it on Monday, 12 days after the attack. Trump took that press conference as the opportunity to pat himself on the back about reaching out to bereaved families of fallen soldiers, while falsely claiming his predecessors did not.

A day later, riding with Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL) to meet her husband’s body at the airport, Johnson’s wife, Myeshia, received a phone call from Trump. According to Wilson, Trump came off as a rambling idiot and insensitive oaf, allegedly telling the widow that Johnson “knew what he signed up for.”

Just when you think Trump can’t possibly get any lower or have less empathy, he manages to find a way.

Though Wilson has little reason to lie over this, Trump has denied the allegations and threatened to release proof that Wilson made up the story. Of course, Trump has previously threatened to expose other people as liars, such as the time he hinted that he had tapes of his conversations with James Comey. Trump later cowered and his staff acknowledged that there were no recordings of their conversations.

Despite Trump constantly touting that he loves the troops and claiming that under his stewardship Americans will respect the troops more than ever, Myeshia Johnson didn’t believe Trump even bothered to remember her husband’s name.
