Day 271: Trump Lies About Former Presidents Not Calling Families of Fallen Heroes
Donald Trump ran his mouth at a press conference yesterday with regards to how his predecessors handled speaking to families of fallen service members.
When pressed, on an obvious and verifiable lie in a follow-up question, he was forced to backtrack.
“Sometimes it’s a very difficult thing to do, but I do a combination of both,” Trump said, referring to calling and sending letters to the families. “President Obama, I think probably did sometimes, and maybe sometimes he didn’t. I don’t know. That’s what I was told.”
“That’s what I was told” is Trump’s favorite way to backtrack. Blame someone else.
For example:
Despite Trump’s semi-retreat on the issue, the White House actually doubled down on his assertions.
In case there was any doubt, Barack Obama did call the families of fallen heroes. He quietly visited the wounded numerous times too.
George W. Bush also spoke to and met with families who lost loved ones.
Trump, meanwhile, is going to get around to calling the families of American soldiers lost in Niger at some point. But he’s been busy: he’s had a ton of golf to play.
