Day 250: Trump to Puerto Rico: You Owe Wall Street Billions, But We’ll Help With Hurricane Relief Anyway

A Category 5 hurricane, Maria, ripped through the Atlantic and devastated Puerto Rico and the surrounding area nearly a week ago, killing two dozen people on the U.S. territory alone. Donald Trump’s response? Stumping for the Alabama Senate primary, attacking NFL players for taking a knee and pushing an ill-fated healthcare bill.

Yesterday, he finally addressed the plight of over three million Puerto Ricans — American citizens — directly.

Trump: Puerto Rico’s infrastructure sucks, they have crazy debt, their electrical grid is ancient, the island has been destroyed, have I mentioned how much money they owe?— because I haven’t forgotten that — but we’ll help anyway.

Supplies are slowly making their way to the island, but things are not “doing well.”

Not even close.

People are struggling to find food and water, homes have been totally destroyed and sick people are lacking access to medical care. Puerto Rico has largely been left to fend for themselves in a time of dire need.

This is a national catastrophe and a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions. Conservative estimates say it will be months before things return to any semblance of normalcy. For many, the island will never be the same. And yet, in this time of incredible need, Trump seems intent on doing anything other than helping millions of American citizens.
