Day 238: Trump’s Inhumane DACA Position Lasted Nine Days
The Wall appears to be crumbling, too.
On September 5, 2017, Donald Trump sent his attorney general, Jeff Sessions, to announce that DACA — the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program initiated under Barack Obama—would be rescinded. Sessions proclaimed
The effect of this unilateral executive amnesty, among other things, contributed to a surge of unaccompanied minors on the southern border that yielded terrible humanitarian consequences. It also denied jobs to hundreds of thousands of Americans by allowing those same jobs to go to illegal aliens.
Sessions added:
The compassionate thing is to end the lawlessness, enforce our laws, and, if Congress chooses to make changes to those laws, to do so through the process set forth by our Founders in a way that advances the interest of the nation.
That is what the President has promised to do and has delivered to the American people.
Well, Trump’s promises — never something to hang your hat on to begin with — have flexed under the constant negativity surrounding the DACA announcement.
Last night, Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) ate dinner at the White House with Trump wherein they made significant in-roads on various immigration issues.
The White House pushed back on that report last night, and this morning Trump denied any deal had been made.
But, subsequent tweets seem to outline the exact deal Schumer and Pelosi championed.
Shockingly, the WALL isn’t actually a “big, beautiful wall” with solar panels that soars to the moon and is paid for by Mexico. It’s merely the fixing of existing fences and barriers already in place, paid for Joe Taxpayer. If Trump wants to call that the same wall he campaigned on, Democrats will let him think he won on that front. (Though seemingly the entire right, from Ann Coulter to Breitbart to even sycophant-eternal Sean Hannity, has derided Trump’s dinner deal.)
Trump then laid the foundation — again, just nine days after Sessions said the humane thing to do would be to send DACA beneficiaries home — for DACA (or something similar) to remain in place.
But Sessions’ announcement said…you know what? Never mind.
Exactly as Chuck & Nancy proclaimed last night, DACA is staying, border security is up, but the only wall being built is reinforcements to existing structures.
