Day 231: Even Republicans Are Tired of Ivanka

The First Daughter needs to go away.

Donald Trump’s prized child, daughter Ivanka, was heralded by some before Trump took office as the calming, moderate voice in his ear that could stop some of the madness.

It clearly hasn’t worked out like that.

She now has an official role (and office) in the White House, and what she does all day is ambiguous.

For instance, for some reason, she wanted to go to a tax reform speech in North Dakota. Trump gleefully recounted the story of her asking if she could attend: “Daddy, can I go with you?”

It goes without saying that Ivanka “Nepotism” Trump has no experience in the field of tax policy, despite being asked to say a couple words to the attendees. This was just a fun field trip for her, with her dad chaperoning and Air Force One as the school bus.

Then, she rankled Republicans by popping into an Oval Office meeting about the debt ceiling.

As Trump was surprisingly siding with the Democrats’ contingent of Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) instead of Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) to raise the debt ceiling for just three months — setting up a December showdown on the issue — Ivanka suddenly appeared.

The debt ceiling debate is constantly one of the most important issues in Washington because it sets an upper limit on the amount of money that the government is allowed to borrow. If the debt ceiling is reached without an increase in the limit, the U.S. Treasury must prioritize and temporarily finance government expenditures and obligations by whatever extraordinary measures they can. Once those measures are exhausted, the U.S. would be looking at defaulting on their bond obligations. Such defaults could have catastrophic effects on the economy and easily trigger a financial crisis and long-term recession.

Ivanka popping in during a meeting to help avoid all of those issues is ridiculous. It wouldn’t be tolerated in any administration but this one.

On behalf of Democrats, Republicans, third parties and independents, Ivanka: go away.
