Day 224: Trump Still Silent on Mexico’s Offer to Provide Harvey Aid
As Donald Trump insults the Mexican people, tries to bully the Mexican government into paying for a border wall, warns of import taxes and publicly threatens to scrap NAFTA, Mexico has risen above all of that and is offering assistance in a ravaged area in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
In a formal statement, their government wrote:
The Mexican government takes this opportunity to express its full solidarity with the people and government of the United States for the damages caused by Hurricane Harvey in Texas, and express that we have offered the US government help and cooperation to be provided by different Mexican government agencies to deal with the impacts of this natural disaster — as good neighbors should always do in difficult times.
This isn’t just empty talk either. After Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, Mexico rendered a vast amount of aid, delivering hundreds of thousands of meals and 184,000 tons of supplies. They put soldiers, engineers and medical personnel on the ground in Louisiana and Mississippi. They lent ships, buses, helicopters, all-terrain vehicles, tankers and radio equipment.
As Harvey finally fizzled out, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is, unsurprisingly, willing to take help from anywhere he can get it.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also offered his thanks for the generous offer, saying, “It’s very generous for Mexico to offer to help in this very, very challenging time.”
Trump, meanwhile, hasn’t said a word. He’s been too busy worried about television ratings and political maneuverings to thank a neighbor willing to provide much-needed goods and services to millions of Americans in a dire situation.
