Secretary of State Rex Tillerson went on Fox News for a Sunday morning interview with Chris Wallace, one of the few real journalists at Fox. He discussed the role of America’s values and the messages being carried to the world by the State Department.

Wallace asked how Donald Trump’s words, especially in light of the United Nations condemning his statements in the wake of Charlottesville, undercut the very idea of American of freedom and equal treatment.

“The president speaks for himself” on those values, Tillerson replied.

His response leaves Wallace clearly stunned for a moment.

Trump and Tillerson have been butting heads almost since the day Tillerson was confirmed. Tillerson has been excluded from key meetings, prevented from publicly speaking in a number of settings, and has had rumor after rumor fly about how he’s on his way out.

Still, he had a chance to make a statement today and didn’t back away when he had the chance. Even after Wallace pressed, Tillerson doubled down on his words.

Meanwhile, also on Sunday morning, as if the dichotomy couldn’t be more obvious, Trump is busy tweeting about campaign stops, book recommendations, a border wall, NAFTA, and occasionally peppering in tweets of encouragement regarding Hurricane Harvey.
