Day -22: Trump: Enough About Russia, Computers Confuse Me

Donald Trump was asked yesterday about the role of Vladimir Putin and Russia hackers’ interference in the recent election. His response was, uh, convoluted:

“I think we ought to get on with our lives. I think that computers have complicated lives very greatly. The whole age of computer has made it where nobody knows exactly what is going on. We have speed, we have a lot of other things, but I’m not sure we have the kind the security we need. But I have not spoken with the senators and I will certainly will be over a period of time.”

He also said this standing next to the scandalous boxing promoter Don King, for some reason, and later suggested that Republican Senators, such as South Carolina’s Lindsey Graham, were only going to investigate the Russian interference because they “ran against me.”

Let’s briefly break Trump’s initial answer down.

“I think we ought to get on with out lives.”

Translation: Don’t worry about Russian interference into our democracy. If it happened, it’s over and not a big deal. It probably won’t happen again.

“I think that computers have complicated lives very greatly.”

Translation: Forget about the fact that computers spread information in an instant that previously would have taken months, weeks, or even as recently as 30 years ago, days (if at all). Access to information is a bedrock principle of democracy, but hey, that information makes our lives complicated. Also, forget about the productivity in using these advanced machines in day-to-day operations of business. It’s all so complicated.

“The whole age of computer has made it where nobody knows exactly what is going on.”

Translation: I’m 70 and I’ve never bothered to learn how any of these doohickeys work, other than this thing called the Twitter.

“We have speed, we have a lot of other things, but I’m not sure we have the kind the security we need.”

Translation: I don’t know what we have besides speed, but probably something. Also, if hackers got in, security must be bad, somehow.

“But I have not spoken with the senators and I will certainly will be over a period of time.”

Translation: I don’t care what the Senators do about investigating Russian interference. I haven’t spoken to them, I will not speak to them and I don’t care what they say or do.

During one debate with Hillary Clinton, Trump referred to something called “the cyber” when discussing technology. Regarding email, he once testified “I don’t do the email thing.” He has no idea the way any of these things work. That’s okay, actually.

But when Trump questions the role computers play in the everyday lives of virtually every American, it shows a total disregard for the importance of information and efficiency.

When Trump question why people continue to harp on Russia interference, it shows a total disregard for the importance of democracy and sovereignty.
