Day 214: Trump’s First Response to Missing Navy Sailors: “That’s Too Bad”
For the second time in three months, a U.S. naval ship has collided with a civilian ship in the Pacific. The U.S.S. Fitzgerald collided with a container ship in June, killing seven, and the U.S.S. John S. McCain collided with a merchant ship yesterday, leaving 10 sailors missing.
Donald Trump’s first response: “That’s too bad.”
For someone that claims to love the troops and veterans more than any other person that’s ever stepped foot on U.S. soil — much less, someone who currently holds the position of commander-in-chief — the lack of empathy regarding missing U.S. military personnel is shocking. (And with a retired four-star general as his chief of staff, it seems wildly unlikely that Trump wasn’t at least given an abbreviated briefing on the situation in near real-time.)
Your favorite restaurant is out of your desired dish? That’s too bad. Your baseball team lost a game in June? That’s too bad. You want to go see a movie but the showtime is sold out? That’s too bad.
Missing Americans should never get a wave and an “eh,” especially from someone in Trump’s position.
And yes, Trump managed to cobble together a good ole “thoughts and prayers” tweet hours later, presumably with the help of aides and a communications team, but this marks yet another instance where he seems to lack basic human emotions or handle times of crisis with any type of effectiveness.
