Day 202: Trump Threatens Nuclear War With North Korea
The isolationist nation immediately responded by threatening to bomb Guam.
As Donald Trump sat next to his wife, Melania, and the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tom Price, his arms were crossed against his chest and eyes darted around the room. Cameras rapidly clicked. Suddenly, he delivered a message about North Korea.
There’s only one type of fire and fury the world has never seen: bigger and stronger nuclear weapons.
This seemingly off-the-cuff comment by Trump got the attention of the North Koreans, who immediately threatened to bomb the U.S. territory Guam in the Pacific, where the U.S. has two military bases.
There are more than 150,000 people who live in Guam whose lives have suddenly just been threatened, all because Trump wanted to spontaneously sound tough. In the classic “Trump accidentally criticizes Trump” department is this tweet from four years ago.
Look at that thing. Could that be more prescient?
Needless to say, other world leaders, including those closest to a potential Pacific conflict, were unhappy with Trump’s rhetoric and the most recent developments.
In one corner there’s Trump, 71, with no military experience of any kind, perpetually overmatched in dealing with the region. As if there was any doubt about what “fire and fury” meant, this morning, after seeing the effect of his words, Trump doubled down, retweeting Fox News propaganda and saying things like:
In the other corner is Kim Jong-un, 33, the third straight ruthless dictator from the Kim family. He seemingly spends every penny possible on military technology and equipment while his people starve. Though he has no actual military experience himself, he goads the world by constantly and publicly testing new weapons and engaging in war-mongering rhetoric. He has Seoul held hostage, with tens of thousands of missiles aimed at the city.
There is no clean solution in North Korea to begin with, and now hundreds of thousands more people have been added to the crossfire for no discernible reason.
