Day -2: Education Secretary Nominee Betsy DeVos Flunks Exam

Donald Trump’s education secretary nominee, Betsy DeVos, had her confirmation hearing yesterday. We previously expressed reservations at her willingness to privatize public education and her abject lack of practical experience.

First, the Republicans protected her hearing by taking the unprecedented step of limiting questions to a mere five-minute inquiry per senator.

What came out of her mouth was worse than any of our initial fears.

(Of course, she touched on those fears too…)

It got worse.

When pressed, she had trouble answering simple questions…

…thought there may be a place for guns in schools because of bears…

…lied…

…learned of the profound philosophical difference and debate among educators between growth and proficiency in education…

…denied her donating $200 million to the Republican party over the years contributed to her nomination…

…and learned about the hallmark law Individuals with Disabilities Education Act…

Again, these were with five minutes worth of questions per senator.
