Day 197: Trump taking more vacation time in August than the average American gets all year

Donald Trump leaves the White House today for a two-and-a-half week vacation to his golf club in New Jersey.

If you want to play the apples-to-apples game, a vacation of this length, this early in a presidency, is pretty unprecedented.

Trump’s vacation, as The Washington Post’s Philip Bump notes, is twice as long as the vacation President Barack Obama took to Martha’s Vineyard in his first year in office — and will mean Trump has spent 53 “leisure” days through August 2017 as compared to 15 for Obama through August 2009.

It’s also not like Trump isn’t being a huge hypocrite.

In July 2015 he declared:

“I would rarely leave the White House because there’s so much work to be done. I would not be a president who took vacations. I would not be a president that takes time off.”

Trump has time and time again proclaimed to understand the plight of the American worker.

But he’s taking 17 days off. By comparison, the average American worker, including both paid vacation and holidays, gets only 16 days off per year.

197 days in, 1265 to go
