Day -14: Who’s Paying For the Border Wall? Mex̶i̶c̶o̶!
You may have heard Donald Trump proclaim roughly 9.4 trillion times that he was going to build a wall on the southern border between the U.S. and Mexico.
He promised that the $10 billion to $12 billion (or likely substantially higher) wall would be paid for by Mexico.
It was literally his only campaign promise for months.
Yesterday, news broke that Mexico would not be paying for the wall, but rather American taxpayers would.
“Under the evolving plan, the Trump administration would rely on existing legislation authorizing fencing and other technology along the southern border. Congress would be asked to ensure that enough money is appropriated to take additional new steps — but would not pass a stand-alone bill authorizing a big new wall.”
In other words, Congress is going to be tasked to make sure there’s enough money set aside in the budget to pay for the wall.
We’re paying for the wall!
You may recall Trump went to Mexico while campaigning. He laughably told everyone after his meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto that the two “didn’t discuss” wall payment. However, Peña Nieto made it clear that, “At the start of the conversation with Donald Trump, I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall.”
Donald Trump has now changed his tune, tweeting:
Right, because Mexico is going to just cut the U.S. a check for billions of dollars. First they were going to pay for it, now they’re going to pay us back for it? Is the story next year that we pay for this wall and Mexico pays for the next wall?
So, America, who’s excited to pay for a monstrosity of a wall to the tune of billions of dollars in upfront costs (plus hundreds of millions of dollars in annual up-keep) that won’t stop migrants or drug smugglers from coming to the U.S., anyway?
Trump asked, “Who’s going to pay for it?”
Trump’s supporters should have yelled, “We are!”
