Day 123: Does Rex Tillerson know he works for Americans?
Russians, South Koreans, Saudis all seem to be given more respect than Americans.
Longtime friend of Russia Rex Tillerson is the current Secretary of State for the United States. But in his last life, Tillerson was the former head of ExxonMobil. Presumably, he was very familiar with the players in oil-rich Saudi Arabia.
Perhaps forgetting for whom he works and to whom he owes a fiduciary duty, Tillerson held a news conference in Saudi Arabia, but specifically excluded the American media.
Maybe Rex thought the American media wouldn’t notice the dozens of reports in other media sources around the world. Maybe Rex thought the American people wouldn’t care that he hinted that the U.S. and Iran may soon have direct interactions. Hell, maybe he’s just not used to Americans being privy to his dealings with the Saudis.
None of those are excuses.
This is a pathetically bad look for the country:
Americans pay his salary. Americans rely on the Secretary of State to act as the nation’s top diplomat to forward national interests. Americans have the right to know what is happening at his press conferences from American media sources.
We’ve seen what happens when the story is one-sided.
Once was an unacceptable omission; twice is a pattern.
Tillerson needs to get accountable or get out.
