Day -12: Mitch McConnell is the Most Dangerous Non-Trump Thing in Politics
Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader and general obstructionist for the last eight years, has suddenly a very different stance on a number of things. From the Senate having a duty to act quickly to nominate a President’s Supreme Court pick to the rushing through of confirmation hearings for Cabinet appointments with scant information, McConnell sings a different tune these days.
Ethical concerns about a number of Cabinet nominees abound, from billions of dollars worth of conflicts of interest to improper ties with some of our foremost geopolitical adversaries.
McConnell demanded full vetting to Harry Reid for President Obama’s nominees eight years ago.
McConnell’s requests were pretty standard: complete background checks, a complete report from the Office of Government Ethics, financial disclosure statements, questionnaires, interviews, full transparency.
Now that Trump has nominated his people, however, McConnell has changed his mind on the importance of those things. For instance, Walter Shaub, Jr., the OGE director, said the Senate’s hearing schedule had overwhelmed his office with information and too much to do in such a short period of time. Shaub said it had not completed ethics screening reviews on several nominees, and that lack of completeness was “of great concern” to him.
McConnell’s response to Democrats concerned about the lack of ethical questions answered: “Grow up and get past that.”
Grow up and get past that?
Strange times, indeed.
Call your Senator and make your voice heard if you think the Senate should not “get past” boundless ethical questions for the people in the highest parts of our government. Let them know you want them to wait to hold confirmation hearings on Donald Trump’s nominees until the OGE’s report is finalized and all other information has been turned over.
Just because someone’s net worth has three commas, or they’ve served as the head of a company, or they support a different candidate doesn’t excuse them from basic ethical transparency to serve the U.S.
