Day 1,444: 12 GOP seditious and sycophantic senators attempt coup on behalf of Trump

Donald Trump lost the 2020 election.

Joe Biden won the 2020 election.

So say the tens of millions of voters who cast ballots. So say the 50 states and Washington D.C. who counted those votes and certified their election results. So say Democratic governors and secretaries of state. So say Republican governors and secretaries of state. So say the scores of courts who have rejected Trump’s claims of voter fraud or election irregularities.

That’s not stopping 12 Republican senators from trying to lay waste to the Constitution and the very idea of democracy.

Nearly a quarter of Senate Republicans are officially preparing to challenge President-elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College win on Jan. 6, a stunning development that demonstrates just how far some in the GOP will go to align themselves with President Donald Trump’s flailing claims that the election was stolen from him.

Eleven more Republican senators announced Saturday they will challenge Biden’s election victory next week when Congress gathers to certify the Electoral College vote. The movement is led by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who circulated the idea among Senate Republicans of voting against certification of the election unless there’s an election audit.

Under 12th Amendment of the Constitution, Mike Pence, as president of the senate, will certify the election at a January 6 joint session of Congress. Under the amendment, he is required to “open all the certificates” of the states to count the votes.

“…The President of the Senate shall, in the presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the certificates and the votes shall then be counted; The person having the greatest Number of votes for President, shall be the President….”

That’s not stopping nearly a quarter of Republican senators from engaging in seditious rhetoric and activity, all to stay in the good graces of the refuse-to-believe-Trump-was-defeated MAGA nation.

Laying bare the true hypocrisy of a stunt designed to fail, five of the senators challenging the results (Daines, Hagerty, Lummis, Marshall and Tuberville) are actually being sworn in despite simultaneously claiming the election was fraudulent.

Republicans claiming to be “constitutionalists,” or “textualists,” or anything else claiming to uphold the tenets of American democracy are further revealing themselves to be nothing but sycophants in suits. Selfish to the bitter end, they don’t want to lose the support of Trump’s voters and foreclose on — at least in the case of Hawley and Cruz — their chance of becoming president one day.

The 12 are craven opportunists who are putting American interests after their own.
