Day 1,421: Trump’s last legal folly and the 106 undemocratic GOP members of Congress forever ruining their reputations over it

Donald Trump’s team is trying to forge a legal farce in an effort to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential race. The strategy will surely fail, but that hasn’t stopped over 100 Republicans members of Congress from jumping into the antidemocratic pit with him.

The legal challenge is aimed at having the Supreme Court issue an order to invalidate millions of votes in four very specific states in an effort to swing the election in Trump’s favor.

They’re asking for the court to block the electors from Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, pushing Biden back under the magic 270-vote total to win.

First the court would have to allow [Texas Attorney General Ken] Paxton to file the suit. Then the court would have to block certification of the Electoral College vote, determine that the four states had allowed massive amounts of “illegal” votes, have the states revisit their vote counts and then resubmit the numbers. The court could also, Trump’s filing suggests, let state legislatures determine who wins each state or throw the entire election to the US House of Representatives, where each state delegation would have one vote — and since Republican delegations outnumber Democratic delegations, Trump would win.

Pennsylvania pushed back on the legal filing calling it “seditious abuse of the judicial process.”

When history judges Trump, there should be ample room for his many enablers within the GOP. Signing on to the lawsuit were 106 congressional Republicans.

Trump isn’t Trump solely because of things he can or can’t do. It’s also because those that have been and are around him that have left him wholly unchecked, from both democratic norms and reality.

The latest legal challenge will fail, because if it succeeds, the American experiment of democracy is gone and the country goes with it. But 106 Republicans are signing their names to a futile legal effort to disenfranchise millions of Americans without a scintilla of fraud. May they wear the scarlet “A” of antidemocratic for the remainder of their time in office and beyond.
