Day 1,401: Trump is in hiding and doing nothing
It’s been 17 days since Election Day and about two weeks since Donald Trump realized that he definitely lost the 2020 election.
He has basically completely receded from public life since, content to shout baseless conspiracy theories on Twitter while his lawyers get embarrassed in courts of law.
Trump hasn’t answered a single question from a reporters since Election Day.
His public schedule is empty.
(One of Trump’s lone appearances, a Veterans Day event, Trump showed up very late and only attended for a few minutes.)
Hesitant to even venture outside, except to play golf, Trump recently canceled a planned Thanksgiving trip to his South Florida resort.
“It feels like bunker mentality,” a White House official said before the decision was circulated.
Even as workers dismantle and truck away the temporary metal mesh fencing that surrounded the White House on Election Day, the President remains fortified inside the building as he continues to deny losing to President-elect Joe Biden.
Some days there is talk of a public appearance, but few have materialized since Biden was projected the election’s winner, securing the same number of electoral votes — 306 — that Trump had previously deemed a landslide win when he took office in 2016.
Most worryingly, Trump has eschewed his intelligence briefings and doing anything resembling diplomacy.
But his schedule has not included a classified intelligence briefing in more than a month, even as his administration is denying those briefings to the President-elect, who convened his own non-governmental national security meeting on Tuesday and invited cameras in for a photo-op.
Trump has mostly stopped phoning US allies, particularly as they move toward recognizing Biden’s win. The last foreign leader the White House said Trump spoke with was French President Emmanuel Macron, who he dialed on October 30 after a terrorist attack in Nice. On Tuesday, two of Trump’s closest global friends, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, placed congratulatory calls to Biden.
Trump is spending his time watching TV and tweeting. As far those around him, many aides have contracted the coronavirus, and even healthy ones aren’t bothering to come in at all.
Trump is being evicted in exactly two months, whether he’s ready or not.
