Day 1,335: Trump, waving white flag at COVID-19 again: it will go away eventually, even if millions of Americans die
Months and months of a horrific and an intentionally downplayed COVID-19 response by Donald Trump and his administration have led to the death of nearly 200,000 Americans, over 6.6 million cases, and added economic hardship for tens of millions Americans.
As the world has largely returned to pre-coronavirus life, the U.S. is still in the thick of dealing with the pandemic.
Trump has waved the white flag when it comes to COVID-19 seemingly every month. He did so again Tuesday, claiming the virus will go away, even without a vaccine (which he ludicrously claimed was “very close” in February). Trump pointed to “herd mentality,” surely meaning “herd immunity” instead.
Trump’s thought is the disease will run its course and then in months or years, the virus will no longer be affecting Americans as the masses develop an immunity to it. That idea would cost millions of Americans their lives and collapse the medical system in the country as treatment would be needed for tens of millions more.
Again, most nations have largely returned to a normal way of life, while the U.S. is battling the disease from coast-to-coast.
Trump eschewed masks for months and turned face covering into a type of political statement.
Trump continues to hold rallies indoors, against all scientific guidelines.
Trump has touted numerous ridiculous and dangerous treatments for the virus.
Trump turned COVID-19 briefings away from science and into reality TV.
Trump freely admitted to intentionally slowing the number of tests down to keep reported numbers lower, even as testing remained the best way to curb the spread.
At every turn, Trump has harmed the American response to a deadly virus, even as he knew the health risks. Now, completely locked into awful positions and response, he’s shrugging his shoulders at potentially millions of Americans’ deaths.
