The Republican National Convention has been a sycophantic propping up of Donald Trump, mostly ignoring the past 3.5 years of dysfunction. Every speaker heaps praise on Trump — more than a standard convention — even as norms are flouted and laws broken.

The show goes on, completely ignoring the major issues currently engulfing the country.

  • Hurricane Laura, a Category 4 storm, set to be a top-10 storm to ever make landfall in the U.S. is bearing down on the gulf coast. The catastrophic storm will inflict untold damage to the region. By way of comparison, Republicans canceled a day of the 2008 convention when a far weaker storm was in the same area.
  • Protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin continue on in the wake of the shooting of Jacob Blake. Early Wednesday morning, a Trump supporter who considers himself part of a militia shot three protesters, killing two. Protests are continuing again Wednesday, as even the NBA saw players boycott the playing of playoff games.
  • COVID-19 rages on from coast-to-coast, even as speakers at the RNC refer to the virus in the past tense. As nearly 6 million Americans have been infected and nearly 180,000 killed, the GOP is content to pretend nothing is amiss. With over 1,000 Americans dying per day, more than 100 Americans are dying during convention hours every day.

The Republican Party has decided to hold their convention in an alternate reality. Ignoring a deadly storm, trigger-happy police officers and wannabe cops and a pandemic, to say nothing of the economic strife affecting millions of Americans, Trump and the GOP want to pretend the country is all rainbows and unicorns.
