Day 1,307: Trump claims he built the ‘greatest economy in history’ despite it currently being held together by duct tape

Donald Trump seems to believe that a roaring economy and unbelievable job figures magically appeared after he took his oath of office on January 20, 2017.

Upset about Michelle Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention, and ignoring Barack Obama’s work leading the U.S. out of the Great Recession, Trump tried to brag about his economic accomplishments, falsely and ludicrously boasting about building “the greatest economy in history, of any country….”

Despite the U.S. lapping the world in number of cases (about 5.5 million) and deaths (about 172,000), Trump seems to think he has saved “millions of lives” from COVID-19. He failed to give any explanation how those lives have been saved, but it’s worth noting that other countries have had nowhere near the infection rates or death counts of the U.S.

As for Trump’s claims about “flowing” jobs, a simple unemployment chart showing the past 20 years reveals how false that claim is. When Trump took office, the unemployment rate was hovering around 4.7%. It currently stands more than twice that figure.

Meanwhile, the national deficit is soaring, despite Trump swearing he would eliminate it with eight years.

The U.S. economy is in tatters — in both the short-term and long-term, largely thanks to Trump’s failed leadership. While the stock market may be rising and the rich are getting richer, entire industries are failing and everyday Americans are struggling to find jobs, make housing payments and keep food on the table for their families.
