Day 1,293: Trump being unable to pronounce Yosemite is bad, but saying ‘it is what it is’ about 156,000 COVID-19 deaths is the real abomination

Donald Trump is being widely mocked, understandably so, for being unable to pronounce Yosemite — as in Yosemite National Park — during a signing ceremony at the White House on Tuesday.

But what he said in an interview with Axios’ Jonathan Swan that made the rounds on Tuesday is 1,000-fold worse.

Asked about rising COVID-19 deaths, Trump flippantly replied, “It is what it is,” about 156,000 dead Americans.

When Swan pushed Trump to answer for his administration’s poor response, Trump nonsensically pointed to bar and line graphs. When Swan noted that Trump was only focusing on one statistic, death as a proportion of cases, while ignoring others, like death as a proportion of the population, Trump got incredibly defensive and said, “You can’t do that.”

Somehow, after more than six months dealing with the virus, Trump seems to think there’s a book or manual that shows less testing is better.

When asked about John Lewis, the late champion for Civil Rights and congressman from Georgia, Trump said he had no opinion of him because Lewis didn’t attend Trump’s inauguration.

Trump also cast doubt on the positive effects of the Civil Rights Act, the landmark law that largely ended segregation and outlawed discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, religion or national origin.

When given every out to wriggle free, he still doubled, tripled and quadrupled down on wishing well an alleged child sex-trafficker.

So while Trump not knowing how to pronounce Yosmite is embarrassing, it’s far more heinous that he is so cavalier about tens of thousands of Americans deaths. And still doesn’t understand the basics about COVID-19. And has no intention of learning more. And holds grudges over the most ridiculous of perceived slights. And is casting doubt on a law that had a monumental effect on ending segregation and discrimination in the U.S. And is wishing the best for an alleged child sex-trafficker.
