Day 1,281: Trump’s election pitches: ‘Obama-Biden was so bad that I got elected’ and MAGA (again)

It’s not too often — even in 2016 — that a candidate openly runs for office with the message: “I might be bad, but that guy’s worse!”

And yet, that’s what Donald Trump’s 2020 platform currently seems to be. In between bragging about being able to pick an elephant out of a photo array and getting “extra credit” for repeating five words consecutively, Trump frequently calls Joe Biden’s mental capacity into question.

In a Thursday tweet that attacked Biden and Barack Obama, Trump touted, in a self-own, “I wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for them.”

The obvious inference from Trump being, ‘You guys hated the last crew so much, you voted for me of all people! Why would you vote for that again?’

Riddled with logical fallacies, like many of Trump’s claims, this one was Icarus and his insult flew so close to the sun that it scorched himself.

Later, seeming to channel 1950s America, he tried to fear-monger “Suburban Housewives of America” — like they are some sort of organized group — into voting for him with a random New York Post op-ed.

Appearing on Trump fanboy Sean Hannity’s show at night, Trump seemed to have ditched the “Keep America Great” tagline and readopted a version of MAGA. Speaking in broad generalities with little substance, Trump told a presumably dough-eyed Hannity, “we’re making America better than it’s ever been.” It’s a strange phrase since he’s been in office for over three-and-a-half years.

Seeing the poll numbers, Trump’s reelection ship seems largely rudderless. He’s demoted one campaign manager and is now accidentally insulting himself, trying to scare women with affordable housing in their neighborhoods and reverting back to 2016 messaging.

It’s clear he’s desperately seeking a message that sticks. But really saying or doing anything to distract from the 1,000-plus people dying daily of COVID-19 is all that matters to him.
