Day 1,273: Trump is spending so long on Goya ads in the Oval Office that he seems confused about the direction of his poll numbers

While at the White House last week, Goya Foods CEO Robert Unanue lavished Donald Trump with praise, including saying that the U.S. was “truly blessed” to have Trump at the helm.

The remarks alienated many people, leading would-be customers to boycott the brand. The comments galvanized others, with some making odd promises or comments related to a rabid consumption of beans.

The Trump family, in flagrant disregard of the law, and with precious little on their calendars, is filling their time by posing with Goya products and pandering in the most obvious way possible.

Trump got in the act on Wednesday.

Conservative media gave Barack Obama endless criticism for having the audacity to put his feet on the Resolute desk (despite his predecessors engaging in the same). Meanwhile, Trump is lining up promotional Goya products in a blatant display of shilling for the company and those same outlets are silent or have a very different focus.

Lining up the products, setting up his pose and making sure he was okay with the picture must have taken some time and energy because Trump seems awful confused about his poll numbers.

In demoting his campaign manager, Brad Parscale, Trump touted what should be an “easier” win than 2016 thanks to “poll numbers … rising fast.”

Trump’s poll numbers are historically bad. In late March, Trump’s aggregate poll numbers saw a net approval rating of -4%. Now, less than four months later, Trump is hovering around a net approval rating of -15%, with just 40% of the country approving of his job performance.

Joe Biden has expanded his lead over Trump, as the latter mixes a horrific COVID-19 response with public embarrassments and unhinged rants. Biden leads Trump by roughly 9 points nationally and is up in the majority of swing states. Trump is even struggling to pull away in traditional red states like Georgia and Texas.

Trump’s focus, as always, remains on things like personal slights and the issue du jour, which is currently beans. The actual people of the nation are so far in his rear view mirror that Trump thinks potential voters will believe that his poll numbers are currently rising.
