Day 1,270: Trump played golf on Sunday and defended it by lying that he plays less than Obama did

Donald Trump famously proclaimed many times in the run-up to the 2016 election that if he won he would hang up his golf clubs. Trump swore, “I’m not going to have time to go play golf, believe me. Believe me. Believe me, folks.”

Of course, nothing could be farther from the truth as on his 1,270th day in office, Trump was at a Trump-branded golf club — this time in Potomac Falls, VA — for the 269th day (and his second round of the weekend). (Running tallies vary due to White House secrecy, but 269 appears to be among the lowest estimates.)

Trump has spent a whopping 21.2% of his days in office on the golf course, shoveling taxpayer money into his pocket on every trip.

He defended the practice by, as usual, pointing the finger at, as usual, Barack Obama.

Trump obviously lied when he alleged that Obama played “more and much longer.” In eight years in office, Obama actually played 333 times, or 11.4% of his total number of days. At the same point in time, Trump has played more than two-and-a-half times as often as Obama.

While Trump claimed that he has golfed fewer times than his predecessor, that’s not accurate, according to a CNN fact check from May. Trump has spent 266 days at his golf clubs at the end of May while Obama had played 98 rounds by that point in his presidency.

Trump also lied when he said he “get[s] a lot of work done on the golf course.” In reality, Trump is so caught up in his game that sometimes he can’t be reached for hours at a time.

Pandemics killings hundreds of Americans per day, internal and external crises, political and personal scandals: nothing keeps Trump away from his acres of golf real estate.
