Day 1,263: As Trump plays golf yet again, enough Americans have died from COVID-19 that it would take a golf course’s acreage to bury them all

Donald Trump played golf at his private course in Virginia yet again Sunday. At the golf course more than once every five days, it’s further evidence that there is no amount of illness, death or national turmoil that will prevent him from playing golf again.

Currently, the COVID-19 death toll in the U.S. is around 130,000. Expected to rise by tens of thousands over the coming months, Trump is more interested in perfecting his putting stroke than a national plan to stem the illness.

As the saying goes, one death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic, and the Trump administration’s latest strategy is to wave the white flag and hope Americans get bogged down by statistics. With 130,000 dead, it’s hard to get a handle on how large a figure that truly is. It’s a bigger number than the capacity of the biggest sports stadium in the world. It’s the population of New Haven, Connecticut.

From a golf perspective, which Trump might understand, it would require a large golf course’s acreage to bury all of the dead from COVID-19.

For reference, there are more than 400,000 people buried on Arlington National Cemetery’s 624 acres of land, for a density of 641 plots per acre.

With 130,000 dead from COVID-19, there would need to be over 200 acres of land to bury everyone who succumbed to the disease, big enough to house a large golf course, driving range and practice area, clubhouse and parking lot.
