Day 1,252: As COVID-19 spikes to all-time high in U.S., Trump continues to pretend it’s over

COVID-19 cases in the U.S. have soared again. All of the lockdowns, social distancing and careful steps taken over the past months have been undone by a combination of a rush to open up the country and a lack of proper safety protocols (such as mask-wearing).

The result is that on Wednesday cases hit all-time highs in the U.S. with 38,115 new cases, an 11% jump from the previous high of 34,203 set way back on April 25.

Compared to the rest of the world, the U.S.’s curve is a humiliating outlier, even adjusting for population size, as the E.U. weighs banning American travelers from entering member nations.

Donald Trump, meanwhile, has his thumbs in his ears and the rest of his hands over his eyes, pretending that nothing is amiss. Scroll threw his Twitter and there will be tweets about the lobster industry or repeated calls of “LAW & ORDER”.

The only times he mentions COVID-19 these days are when he claims the entire disease is an excuse for mail-in ballots…

…or when he pretends that he defeated the disease (while simultaneously lamenting the scientists getting any credit).

Furthering the idea that Trump has given up on trying to stem the disease, he hosted President Andrzej Duda of Poland at the White House on Wednesday as if nothing was amiss in the U.S.

Over the past four days, Trump was in Oklahoma and Arizona for rallies, with nary a mask in sight at either location. At the latter, Trump gleefully admitted that he had no idea what the “19” in “COVID-19" stands for.

COVID-19’s prolonged explosion has been a uniquely American problem. To mention the coronavirus in any serious capacity is to acknowledge the abject failure by the federal government, up to and certainly including Trump, to adequately address the crisis.

And while Trump may try to ignore it or pretend that all is well, over 120,000 Americans have died from the disease with tens of thousands more to surely follow.
