Day 1,244: Trump calls school choice the greatest civil rights issue of all time, claims there’s an AIDS vaccine, and talks to himself
The public deterioration of Donald Trump continues.
Never whip-smart, never the most well-spoken, never the smoothest operator, Trump’s gaffes are only increasing in frequency these days.
One day after a nearly empty schedule, Trump’s Tuesday public calendar only had two items on it: an intelligence briefing and remarks on an executive order relating to policing practices. As Trump signed the order, he was surrounded by law enforcement representatives, without any families of the victims of police brutality present. The order, pandering at its finest, does little to curb bad police behavior. All the while, Trump was touting law and order, even for those that “don’t know that’s what they want.”
Trump also continues to shout about law and order on Twitter.
During his Rose Garden remarks, Trump tried to stay on topics related to police reform, but ended up veering off course. At one point he discussed school choice, the controversial idea to expand educational options, generally by way of vouchers for private school attendance, charter schools and magnet schools.
Trump nonsesically described fighting for school choice — at an event meant to signify civil rights progress toward curbing racial disparity and violence in policing — as “the civil rights of all time in this country.” Trump added, “Frankly, school choice is the civil rights statement of the year, of the decade, and probably beyond, because all children have to have access to quality education.”
While trying to brag about the fight against COVID-19, Trump touted his team’s previous work, including their “com[ing] up with the AIDS vaccine.” Except, there is no AIDS vaccine.
Apparently not seeing enough people agree with him throughout the day for his liking, Trump decided to comment on his own tweet to agree with himself, after previously retweeting his original message.
It’s the second time in two days Trump has retweeted and commented on his self-affirmation about polls not adequately capturing his base.
It’s also possible that Trump’s cowardice, cruelty and incompetence have reached a tipping point.
