Day 1,235: Trump ignores coronavirus as U.S. approaches 2 million cases

Donald Trump’s coronavirus revisionism has been predictable and unsuccessful. Facts don’t lie and Trump’s own words are damning.

As the disease was beginning its spread, Trump swore the disease would quickly be eradicated from American soil. When the real number surged to 1 million just two months later, Trump said he was right since the number would be “down to zero” eventually.

Now, six weeks after the U.S. hit 1 million cases, the nation is approaching 2 million cases, another sobering milestone that easily leads the world. The death toll is currently hovering around 110,000, increasing by 500 to 1,200 people per day.

Cases are surging around the country again, two weeks after Memorial Day drew many people out of their homes. As social distancing guidlelines are eased or wholly ignored, cases are expected to continue rising in the days and weeks ahead.

Trump’s leadership on the issue is nowhere to be found, with Trump letting coronavirus news blend into the background. Ever happy to stoke racial tensions, Trump has focused his attention on the police versus protesters fight instead.

Once occurring daily, there hasn’t been a White House press briefing in five weeks about the virus. Trump continues to push an “open, open, open” narrative that ignores the disease entirely while forcing scientists and experts out of sight.

Since June 1, Trump has tweeted an astounding 500 times. There has been no commentary of a plan or reference to science or even empathy for those suffering and dying. The only 11 mentions of coronavirus during that period are Trump’s retweeting of Republican politicians and departments under his purview bragging about coronavirus funding.
