Day 1,228: Twitter tough guy Trump hid from protesters in bunker designed for terrorist attacks

Donald Trump talks a big game, but the five-time draft dodger has a history of rarely backing it up. Instead, he lets others do the dirty work.

That idea reared its head over the weekend. Protesters were outside the White House gates on Friday, demanding justice for George Floyd and marching against racism and police brutality. Trump made clear that black people were not part of the MAGA team as he tried to recruit his supporters to appear at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue the next day.

It turns out that on Friday, the Twitter tough guy was cowering in the White House bunker, a space ordinarily reserved for potential terrorist attacks.

Trump spent nearly an hour in the bunker, which was designed for use in emergencies like terrorist attacks, according to a Republican close to the White House who was not authorized to publicly discuss private matters and spoke on condition of anonymity. The account was confirmed by an administration official who also on condition of anonymity.

Trump has told advisers he worries about his safety, while both privately and publicly praising the work of the Secret Service.

Yet the keyboard warrior spent most of the weekend tweeting things like this:

As always, there’s a tweet for everything.

Trump, a lifelong racist, has stoked racial tensions for years and tried to divide the nation both before and after taking office. Seeing the effects of his efforts, Trump hid underground and tried to get others to do his bidding for him via the Twitter app.
