Day 1,220: White House set the table on Friday for Trump to play golf during a pandemic on Saturday
Donald Trump’s golf habit is well-documented. Even during as the coronavirus picked up steam in the U.S., Trump could be found hitting the links as late as March.
The obvious would-be negative PR kept Trump inside for the past two months, but cabin fever has kicked in. Something seemed to be afoot on Friday when White House Coronavirus Task Force Coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx went out of her way multiple times to say that playing golf, with social distancing, was a safe activity.
So it was little surprise to see Trump on the course Saturday morning.
The coronavirus death toll in the U.S. is rapidly approaching 100,000 and more than 1.5 million have been infected. In 2014, Trump was critical of Trump playing golf during the Ebola scare, when just two Americans were found to be infected. Trump said, “When you’re president, you sort of say, like, ‘I’m going to give it up for a couple years and I’m going to really focus on the job.’”
After taking a two-and-a-half month hiatus from golf, Trump has still visited one of his golf properties an astounding 20% of his days in office.
