Day 1,190: Trump touts UV light and injectable disinfectants as potential coronavirus treatments

Take a combination of ego, desperation and stupidity and you will find Donald Trump at his daily coronavirus press briefings. Unwilling to cede the podium to actual scientists and doctors for longer than a few moments, Trump frequently touts nonsense.

Now, with Trump’s previous wonder drug all-but shown to be worthless and potentially more dangerous than no additional care, he’s on to his next treatment idea: ultraviolet light and injectable disinfectants.

“So, supposing we hit the body with a tremendous — whether it’s ultraviolet or just very powerful light. And I think you said that hasn’t been checked but you’re going to test it. And then I said, supposing you brought the light inside of the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way. And I think you said you’re going to test that too. Sounds interesting. And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute, one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning? Because you see it gets on the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it’ll be interesting to check that. So that you’re going to have to use medical doctors with. But it sounds interesting to me, so we’ll see. But the whole concept of the light, the way it kills it in one minute, that’s pretty powerful.”

Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response coordinator, sitting just feet away from Trump, looked like she was ready to crawl into a hole and call it a career.

Trump’s latest suggestions — like many of his previous ones — are incredibly dangerous, monumentally stupid and, obviously, will not work. For the sake of all Americans, he should let actual experts convey the truth about the coronavirus while he stands at least six feet away.
