Day 1,156: Trump misses a softball and shows, yet again, that he’s an awful human being
Being president means answering questions, some of them difficult, about decisions you’ve made and justifications for how you arrived there. With the coronavirus wreaking havoc on the U.S. and the world, Donald Trump has a lot of tough questions to answer regarding his administration’s horrific and dangerous response to the pandemic.
And yet, during a Friday press briefing, Trump was lobbed a softball. He promptly self-immolated to reveal the lack of any decent human being anywhere under his baggy suit, even during times of crisis.
He was asked what he would tell a worried nation during a time when everyone is clearly on edge.
Trump responded by insulting the reporter, who lost a colleague to the coronavirus earlier in the day, before accusing the reporter of asking “a very nasty question.”
That’s not only not a nasty question, it’s remarkably easy to answer and look “presidential” doing so. That’s without even saying anything truly transformative either. In fact, Mike Pence was able to answer the question simply and effectively later on.
Trump also stood next to some of the U.S.’s top infectious disease minds and tried to overrule their scientific knowledge as he lied, yet again, about treatment options.
Trump would angrily insult the State Department, calling it the “Deep State Department” during the briefing.
Meanwhile, he continues to show his lack of leadership skills. Trump is deferring virtually all decisions to state governments — despite the fact that national coordination is vital to stop a nationwide outbreak — but refusing to give them the resources to do his job for him.
Trump cannot do neither the little things nor the big things well. This is all a show and a game to him.
Trump was warned by U.S. intelligence in January and February about the potential for the coronavirus to become a pandemic. But he chose to hold rallies and falsely call the virus a “new hoax” and claim that the illness would be eradicated in short order.
Millions of Americans will get sick or die or be laid off or have to postpone their weddings or miss graduations or lose a large chunk of their life savings in large part directly due to Donald Trump and the decisions he has made or refused to make over the last few months.
