Day 1,103: Independents overwhelmingly want Senate to remove Trump
Democrats think Donald Trump is guilty of an extortion scheme meant to induce Ukraine to investigate his political rivals.
Republicans are covering their eyes, sticking their fingers in their ears and screaming that Trump is innocent.
However, independent voters are overwhelmingly siding with Democrats and want Trump removed, according to a Fox News poll. A total of 50% of Americans want Trump convicted and removed (compared with 44% against). While Democrats and Republicans are about even in their support for their respective sides, independents favor conviction and removal by a whopping 53–34 margin.
In addition, the poll found Trump underwater on virtually every subtopic outside of the economy: healthcare, guns, the environment, immigration, race relations, foreign policy and government spending.
The vast majority of Americans across the board politically, according to another poll, want the Senate to call witnesses to testify in Trump’s trial.
SurveyUSA asked 4,096 registered voters whether witnesses with firsthand knowledge should be allowed to testify, with 71 percent of Republicans, 93 percent of Democrats, and 81 percent of Independents saying witnesses should be allowed to testify. Only 15 percent of Republicans said that they should not be allowed to testify, while 4 percent of Democrats, and 7 percent of Independents said they shouldn’t.
Trump has been impeached for serious actions that intended to weaken U.S. democracy for personal gain. The facts are not seriously in doubt and all but the right wing are seeing Trump’s impeachable conduct for what it is: egregious enough to warrant removal from office.
