Day 1,083: As Iran bombs U.S. military sites, the lack of senior aides under Trump is especially dangerous

Iran launched an attack on two military bases housing U.S. troops in Iraq on Tuesday. Raining over a dozen ballistic missiles over the area, Iran called the strike an act of “self-defense,” in what was widely seen as a direct retaliation for last week’s U.S.’s drone strike that killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

And while Iran is urging restraint, and it appears as though the strikes ended in no casualties, the situation remains extremely fluid.

Because of that, the dearth of senior aides under Donald Trump has never been more alarming. With Trump content to govern by tweet, the adults in the room become more important, and there seem to be precious few at the moment.

  • The U.S. has no Director of National Intelligence or Deputy Director
  • The U.S. has no Homeland Security Secretary
  • The U.S. has no Navy Secretary
  • The U.S. has no head of Customs and Border Patrol
  • The U.S. has no head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement

In addition, scores of deputy and other senior positions remain unfilled. In the current era, the pool of competent humans in the White House has never been shallower.

At this instance — where another full blown war that costs trillions of dollars and untold lives could be just a tweet away — that’s a monstrous potential problem.
