Day 1,080: Trump casually threatens to commit war crimes on Twitter

Trying to play commander-in-chief via Twitter in between playing more golf — yes, he was it again Saturday — Donald Trump issued threats to Iran following an already substantial escalation of tensions following the U.S.’s drone strike of a top Iranian general.

Trump used itchy fingers to not only disparage Iran, but threatened to commit war crimes.

Targeting cultural sites is so obviously war crime, it’s written plainly in the Geneva Conventions.

Intentionally destroying cultural sites is what ISIS did, and now Trump wants to do it too. His actions would also unnecessarily endanger civilians, yet another war crime.

Oddly, Trump is threatening symbolic retribution for something that happened four decades ago.

None of this is much of a surprise considering Trump’s affinity for war criminals and previous threatening of other war crimes. For instance, he said the U.S. would “keep the oil” in whatever areas the U.S. military eventually occupies. But a U.S. president threatening to break all sorts of international rules in violent and deadly ways should be leading every news broadcast around the world.
