The scarlet “I” will hang around his neck forever.

Donald John Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives after a Wednesday evening vote. He became the third President of the United States to be impeached, by far for the most egregious conduct.

Andrew Johnson was impeached largely due to political turmoil after the Civil War. Bill Clinton was impeached for lying about sexual misconduct.

Trump was impeached for extorting a foreign nation to investigate one of his political foes in exchange for military aid. Trump’s efforts undermined national security, U.S. democracy, and the 2020 election. Then, he had evidence of his illegality buried, refused to turn over documents and other evidence, and prevented many key witnesses from testifying about his and their actions.

After Senate Republicans vowed to rig Trump’s trial, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) revealed the ace up her sleeve: the articles of impeachment would not necessarily be delivered to the Senate until fair trial rules could be negotiated.
