Day 1,062: Batshit crazy: good luck reading Trump’s letter to Pelosi and thinking he’s even 1% sane

Donald Trump wrote a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) that makes it impossible to think he’s anywhere near fit for the presidency.

The five-plus page letter rants about impeachment. It also reveals, yet again, as laughable the narrative that Trump has tried to sell for years: that’d he’d welcome impeachment.

Among his craziest comments:

“The impeachment represents an unprecedented and unconstitutional abuse of power by Democrat [sic] lawmakers, unequaled in nearly two and a half centuries of American legislative history.”

(Impeachment procedures are literally in the Constitution, meaning undertaking them properly, by definition, can’t be unconstitutional. Two presidents have actually been impeached.)

“By proceeding with your invalid impeachment, you are violating your oaths of office, you are breaking your allegiance to the Constitution, and you are declaring open war on American Democracy [sic].”

(Nope. Again, impeachment is in the Constitution and the House of Representatives has the ability to impeach a president. Trump is trying to stoke more partisan animus among citizens.)

“Even worse than offending the Founding Fathers, you are offending Americans of faith by continually saying pray for the President, when you know this statement is not true, unless it is meant in a negative sense.”

(Trump is pretending to be able to read Pelosi’s mind, all so he can make sure evangelical voters stay planted firmly behind him.)

“Your chosen candidate lost the election in 2016, in an Electoral College landslide (306–227), and you and your party have never recovered from this defeat.”

(The election was over three years ago. No one talks about the Electoral College numbers more than Trump. Historically, the result was far from a landslide.)

“You view democracy as your enemy!”

(Trump is trashing the Speaker of the House, who has worked in government for over three decades. Meanwhile, he has routinely cozied up to dictators and authoritarians since taking office, even expressing admiration for the power they have.)

“Congressman Adam Schiff cheated and lied all the way up to the present day, even going so far as to fraudulently make up, out of thin air, my conversation with President Zelensky of Ukraine and read this fantasy language to Congress as though it were said by me.”

(Not only did Schiff make it clear he was paraphrasing Trump, none of what Schiff said has been the basis for impeachment. Trump’s own words, the words of witnesses and other supporting documentation have been the evidence used during the impeachment inquiry.)

“After three years of unfair and unwarranted investigations, 45 million dollars spent, 18 angry Democrat prosecutors, the entire force of the FBI, headed by leadership now proven to be totally incompetent and corrupt, you have found NOTHING! Few people in high position could have endured or passed the test. You do not know, nor do you care, the great damage and hurt you have inflicted upon wonderful and loving members of my family. You conducted a fake investigation upon the democratically elected President of the United States, and you are doing it yet again.”

(Trump’s DOJ undertook that investigation, headed by special counsel Robert Mueller. It was far from fruitless, leading to many arrests and convictions of top Trump personal and political aides, including his national security adviser, his campaign manager, his deputy campaign manager and his attorney. It also revealed just how deep Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election was.)

“Any member of Congress who votes in support of impeachment against every shred of truth, fact, evidence, and legal principle, is showing how deeply they revile the voters and how truly they detest America’s Constitutional order.”

(Voting for pretty straightforward impeachment counts doesn’t mean anyone “detest[s] American’s Constitutional order,” whatever that means.)

“Worse still, I have been deprived of basic Constitutional Due Process [sic] from the beginning of this impeachment scam right up until the present. I have been denied the most fundamental rights afforded by the Constitution, including the right to present evidence, to have my own counsel present, to confront accusers, and to call and cross-examine witnesses.”

(Trump’s ability to call witnesses and present evidence is not guaranteed during the impeachment phase. Like a criminal defendant in criminal court, Trump has far more expanded rights during the trial phase. However, the House has allowed Trump’s lawyers to participate by cross-examining witnesses and being present at hearings. Trump has chosen not to participate.)

“More due process was afforded to those accused in the Salem Witch Trials.”

(Nineteen people were killed during the Salem Witch Trials.)

“This is nothing more than an illegal, partisan attempted coup that will, based on recent sentiment, badly fail at the voting booth.”

(It’s not illegal, and it’s not a coup, as most Americans agree.)

“… I write this letter to you for the purpose of history and to put my thoughts on a permanent and indelible record.”

(Trump is free to testify, under oath, at his trial if and when he is impeached. There is zero indication he will do so.)

There was plenty more insanity that Trump spew. None of it revealed a healthy mind from the man who has the nuclear codes.
